Fireborn: Dark Phoenix
Alignment- Magic and Nature
Nature is a series of familiar laws – or perhaps, tendencies and probabilities – that can be predicted with reasonable accuracy, and on which machines and societies can be founded. Magic is almost the inverse; a chaotic force that can break and flout these natural rules, conjuring fire from thin air, reshaping matter, taking or creating life – doing the impossible.
Anything, including characters, can be Magically aligned, Naturally aligned, or Non-Aligned. This has a number of effects. Alignment is a trinary state; the three listed options are absolute.
Magic is subtly but definitely harder to use when in an utterly non-magical area; and technology becomes prone to instability when in a strongly magical area. Alignment can be influenced in various ways, but heavy reliance on magic in an area can ‘use up’ the magical force and shift it towards nature; and by the same token heavy use of advanced or particularly powerful technology in an area can give the natural side of things a boost, and gradually squeezes magic out. Magic is, by its nature, relatively rare and unstable.
Races that are Magic aligned gain certain benefits and hindrances:
-For the purposes of calculating Mana Pool, their Earth score counts as one higher than it actually is.
-They must spend two karma to negate one dose of physical overkill damage when in a Naturally-Aligned area
-They can double their Max Ki Rank when using a Magical Key; but halve it when using a Tech Key, rounding up in both cases.
-Their Karma Pool multiplier is x5
-They can regain karma by absorbing power from a magical item (as per the standard rules for Karmic Items)
Races that are Nature aligned gain similar benefits and hindrances:
-For the purposes of calculating Mana Pool, their Earth score counts as one lower than it actually is, and they have no “ignore damage” threshold for Mana (i.e. Mana Draw is at least a minor drain).
-They must spend two karma to negate one dose of physical overkill damage when in a Magically-Aligned area
-They can double their Max Ki Rank when using a Tech Key; but halve it when using a Magical Key, rounding up in both cases.
-Their Karma Pool multiplier is x3.
- At the end of combat, they regain all karma spent in combat (excepting that spent on legacies).
Races that are Non-Aligned gain other benefits and hindrances:
-Their Ki Pool is equal to their Air plus Earth (i.e. double standard)
-Their Karma Pool multiplier is x4
-They can regenerate karma as per Magic-Aligned characters and Nature-aligned characters, BUT halve the amount of karma they gain from draining karmic items, and after combat regain their Earth score in karma only. They do not gain their Earth score as a bonus to regenerated karma at any time.
-They can drain their Mana Pool to regenerate their Karma at a rate of one karma per -1 Mana Drain they take. They must wait at least a full day between uses of this ability.
